Covered stair

This outside staircase , facing southwest , was getting all the weather , the best way of effectively protecting it was to roof over it .

The carefully measured and assembled timbers were passed over with an adze to get rid of the marks left by the saw mill . The tool on the left of this picture , however , is an axe !

Once in place it marries in well with the architecture staying in tune with the traditional building style .

Once slated the roof protects the stairs from the rain while letting in the low winter sun , and in summer provides shade and shelter from the overhead sun on hot days . An agreeable place to read a book on a lazy Sunday afternoon !

  1. Carpenter in Brittany, huh? You've chosen a beautiful place and beautiful work, man. I ended up (so far) to be an engineer in the Netherlands. Berlin's far away and long ago, now - just like Skye and Traquair. How can I leave contact data for you? Are you on google plus? Maybe then I'll sign up there, too. Kind regards, Carsten
